How is AI API cost calculated?

AI providers charge per token, split between input (prompt) tokens and output (completion) tokens, usually priced per one million tokens. Total cost equals (input tokens × input price) plus (output tokens × output price).

A token is a chunk of text roughly four characters or three-quarters of a word long. Models read and write in tokens rather than raw characters.
